Donovan Baker, a wrestler from Palmdale, California, has now entertaining offers from DWU Dakota Westlyn University, San Francisco State , Chabot College and Skyline College..
Baker, with a record of 23-9 with 19 pins total, wants to end up representing more than just a university- he plans to go for Olympic gold.
Olympic dreams don’t happen over night. Earning numerous awards and scholarships after high school for his moves on the mat, Baker briefly put wrestling on hold, instead focusing on academics at Kentucky State University.
Unfortunately, for a group of fellow students, Baker’s wrestling resume was something to be challenged, not respected.
“ It was a different environment and far from home,” Baker said. The community at KSU was so different to his own hometown, “I found myself fighting everyday out there.”
Eventually, small fights turned serious and several students on the Kentucky State University Football team hospitalized Baker, attacking him as he walked though a dark tunnel on campus. While lying in his hospital bed, with help on the way from California, Baker could think of only one thing: he missed wrestling.
Where old teammates from high school were off breaking records breaking college records, Baker had been hitting the books and not the mat. Baker realized that no school was going to come to him, he would have to do some work to get back out there.
“I lived by the saying, ‘Work wins when wishes won’t’ and I decided to contact coaches,” Baker said.
Baker started getting positive feedback and was offered wrestling scholarships at several prominent schools such as DWU Dakota Westlyn University in South Dakota or several Bay Area schools including San Francisco State University, Chabot College or Skyline College.
Baker’s Olympic dreams are alive once more.
“I’ve promised my friends and family is that I am going to go to Nationals and plan to wrestle in the Olympics one day,” Baker stated. “I hope, when people read my story, that it can help them to know it is never to late an there is always hope”
